Rubbish, waste and recycling

Amber Valley Borough Council’s policy is that during the Covid-19 pandemic extra refuse will not be collected unless residents qualify for additional capacity or have missed a collection.

The increase in refuse collected due to more people being furloughed or working at home has increased pressure on the waste service. Consequently, there is insufficient capacity on refuse collection day to take additional bags of waste. Please ensure your bin lid is closed properly when it is put out for collection.

Extra recycling is however, still collected throughout the year.

Large cardboard boxes can be collected if they are broken down into smaller pieces that can easily be fitted inside of the recycling bin with the bin lid closed properly. Please either place the cardboard inside the recycling bin on the next recycling collection or leave the cardboard by the side of the bin. However if it is raining please do not leave the cardboard outside to get wet because the crews will not pick up cardboard that is wet through and falling apart.

Please leave extra recycling in cardboard boxes or re-useable plastic boxes by the side of the recycling bin so the contents of the box can be easily tipped into the recycling bin. Please do not put any polystyrene or plastic bags inside the recycling bin. What can be put in your bin?

Please do not overfill your caddy with glass.

Our refuse team will continue to collect your household waste and recycling, clinical waste, garden waste and bulky waste on your scheduled days, however, please be aware that there may be service delays in your area. You can find up to date information at

We are aware that there will now be more parked cars on residential streets due to the government lock down and home working, please be considerate with parking so the refuse vehicles have access to your street.

Our trade waste refuse service is running as normal.

These pages will tell you everything you need to know about recycling and waste. We’ll tell you what you can recycle and where, what happens to your waste when we collect it and how you can reduce how much waste you produce.
