Demolition and clearance of the remains of the existing Swiss Tearooms building began on Tuesday 10 September and work is due to start on Belper River Gardens’ new Swiss Tearooms the following week, with the installation of the foundations.
The new building has been designed to be a sympathetic but contemporary take on the original, and carries over features, such as, the large hipped roof and veranda. The new Swiss Tearooms is fully funded, with £320,000 provided by Amber Valley Borough Council and a further £100,000 from Belper Town Council and will provide indoor seating for around 40 customers and a similar number under the large veranda.
Councillor Ben Bellamy, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, pictured on a bulldozer at the start of demolition commented: "I’ve been committed to delivering a new Swiss Tearooms that addresses the heritage of the River Gardens and the importance of the World Heritage Site, whilst meeting the needs of today’s customers. I’m therefore, proud to be here to at the start of works and I look forward to being one of the first customers in spring 2020".
